Academics
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) was founded in 1869 and like many other Big Ten universities it is a land-grant institution. It is a major research university offering over 150 undergraduate majors to its 24,593 currently enrolled students. UNL's commitment to research is obvious through the fact that for the fiscal year of 2009, it was awarded $122.5 million in research funding. Sitting at No. 46 in the US News and World Report's ranking of public universities and No. 101 overall in the country, UNL comes in at last in the Big Ten, though this should not be taken as a slight towards the university and more of a testament to the Big Ten's academic prestige. UNL offers an affordable quality education with in-state tuition costing $7,648 and out-of-state tuition priced at $19,932 per year.
Home Sweet Home
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is located in none other than Lincoln, Nebraska of course. Located in eastern Nebraska and serving as the state's capitol, it currently has a population of over 250,000 people. The town was originally founded as Lancaster but the name was changed to Lincoln in honor the recently assassinated president when it became the capitol in 1867. Since it is located in the Midwest, Lincoln is subjected to a wide range of weather patterns. The summers are hot but not overly humid and the winters are cold, with temperatures usually staying under the freezing point. Snowfall is not usually heavy but there is always a possibility of a blizzard. Lincoln's biggest threat of hazardous weather comes from tornadoes as Lincoln is located in the middle of tornado alley.
Athletics
Going by nickname “Cornhuskers”, or Huskers for short, the university currently supports 21 varsity sports. UNL had been apart of the Big Twelve or its predecessors from 1907 until joining the Big Ten starting this academic year. The Cornhuskers have won 5 NCAA championships across all sports, excluding football in which there is no NCAA championship. But when talking about Nebraska Athletics it all comes down to their beloved football team. The program has won five national championships in 1970, '71, '94, '95, and '97 and posted an all-time record of 840-345-40, good for 4th in all-time division 1-A wins. They play at Memorial Stadium which has a capacity of 81,607 and always sells out. The Cornhuskers have sold out every home game since November 3rd, 1962, a streak that is currently at 314 games. That awe-inspiring streak is far and away the longest in the country.
